United Relief Force Foundation
The Haiti Educational Program is a community development program that United Relief Force Foundation has created as a way to provide knowledge and skills as well as encourage the Haitian youth to strive for a brighter future. Haiti, one of the world’s poorest and least developed countries, also has a very low educational system.
The Haiti Educational Program was initially thought of by the United Relief Force Foundation Founder and President, Guy Chevalier. As a child, Guy grew up in the poorest part of Haiti, Cite du Soleil. Since 90% of the primary schools in Haiti are private, rather than state-funded, parents have to provide the necessary funds for their child’s education. As a child Guy witnessed many of his friends unable to go to school, for the simple fact that their parents did not have the money to do so. This situation still continues to this very day where the literacy rate is only 53% in the country. Although, Guy was able to move to the US at the age of 16 with his family for a better life, there still are many children and young adults in Haiti that are not receiving an education because a lack of money as well as shortages in educational supplies and instructors. The Haiti Educational Project is a way to aid in minimizing this situation. Currently there are over 380,000 Haitian orphans as a result of the Haiti earthquake that occurred January 12, 2010. With this being said, the Haiti Educational Program is needed now more than ever.
